]]>crazy nyctag:blog.kategolden.com,2008-04-02:2fe7b1af-8ba7-4bfb-9eaa-baca5c881479kate robinson2008-04-02T21:45:56Z2008-04-02T20:04:00Z 1. went to salvation army the other weekend to drop off our old air purifier and senseo coffee maker. often times, they collect items at the truck outside the building. guy stops me, saying he could take my donation. i've lived in nyc for almost 14 years, so i know better, but felt the need to help the guy out. he said if i needed a receipt that i could give him just the air purifier and take the senseo inside for a receipt. maybe he didn't know what the senseo was (and at this point, it is actually more valuable). obviously it was a scam -- he said he worked w/ the salvation army. so, asked inside and they said he didn't. on my way out, i said to him, "it's not nice to lie." he apologized. but ya know, if he makes $5 of the old thing, good for him. he needs te money more than i do.
2. then i go to the bank to deposit a check. didn't have a pen on me to fill out the deposit envelope at the ATM, so i asked a woman there. she had just finished using her pen and had set it on the table. i asked, "excuse me, do you have a pen i may borrow?" she said, "i don't have one." of course i looked at her pen, then at her, then the pen. nothing. then i see people coming out of the branch door -- had no idea chase was open on saturdays! so, i go upstairs to deposit at the teller. i fill out the deposit slip upstairs, where they still have pens available. Same woman is in line and, i think felt bad about how she treated me, so she asks, "do you still need the pen?"
3. while in line at bank, another woman was at the teller. she loudly exlaims, "i'm depositing $1,000, NOT $3,000." Guess she wanted everyone to know that she was not withdrawing any money -- guess it was an alert not to rob her.
4. in a cab -- i usually look at the driver, glance at the name. today i was in my little world and didn't do those things. after a few blocks, i did look up. the man was ancient. got a little concerned -- is he able to drive? so i look at his name - josef madenelavich -- or something like that. i ask, "mr. m....., how long have you been driving a cab?" he responds, "oh, that's a nice way of asking how old i am." i said, "not at all, honestly curious to know -- you could've been driving for 2 yrs or 20 yrs. maybe it's a 2nd career." he said he had been a NYC cab driver for 58 years!!!!! ]]>March 2008 - Happy St. Patty's Day!!!!!tag:blog.kategolden.com,2008-03-17:b2d8e06c-7377-4ace-83ff-cb91dfcaae1dkate robinson2008-03-23T16:25:06Z2008-03-17T22:42:00Z

I'm only going to fly to locations they fly to. Reasons I like Jet Blue: 1. TV -- got to watch all my fav shows from the second I got on the plane till we exited. 2. Really comfy big seats w/ lots of leg room (since I need that) 3. No meals -- airplane food is nasty, so just give me snacks 4. No beverage cart that bangs into you or prevents you from going to the restroom -- instead they come by and take your order. For premium beverages, you cannot pay by cash (so no scrambling for small bills) -- only accept credit cards which are taken once you close out your account.

My cousin Sally came to visit on Thursday w/ her daughter Lindsey (brother Patrick is sommelier @ Porter House) and husband Matt. They're staying in our apt while we came to NJ.
Sally called me this morning and said, "Don't worry, your apt is fine, but something really weird happened." ::
They go to dinner @ PH then to see Avenue Q. Sally comes back afterwards. Lindsey comes back couple hours later and goes to bed (in our bedroom). Sally goes into bedroom a few minutes later to get some stuff out of her bag. Everything is normal. Matt comes back another hour later and finds our full-length mirror, face up in the bed next to Lindsey. If it fell, it would've fallen onto the floor -- it's not near the bed. And, it would've fallen mirror face down. Also, Sally's wallet was removed from her purse, but nothing was taken.
Soooooooo, looks like we have a ghost. They have no idea what happened. Sally was in the living room the entire night and saw no one but Matt come in or out of the place. I seriously doubt our cat was capable of doing this.
I'm just bummed that it didn't happen when we were there. I wanna meet our ghost. Guess he or she didn't like strangers in our place. We have a security ghost.

Then I got that stomach flu/virus that's taking over the East coast. Was in bed all day for practically the rest of her trip. But, we were able to put up our 1st tree in NYC:
I did have a brief reprieve from my illness to throw mum a brunch party. I invited a few ladies from our building, as well as my good friend Merritt, her mother and husband. Merritt is one of the few viewers of my blog, so I am finally posting a pic of her on my blog (although she can be seen more here: kateandalex.com/neworleans/). We took photos recently while getting fitting for our bridesmaids dresses, but they weren't very flattering.

Got great gifts, though. I've used a fountain pen since high school -- initially just to be weird and different, but haven't been able to write w/ anything else since. So, Alex got me a beautiful Monteverde in Rose/Black and engraved Kate Robinson-Golden (haven't got around to changing my name officially just yet) and my mom gave me 2 antique ink wells, one of which is part of a matching set to hold the nibs and a tray for my pens (she also got me a staff pen to use w/ the nibs). Also got me LL Bean hiking shoes and she hand-carved ornaments for us (Star of David for Al and Rho Chi for me -- Christ's name in Greek -- will post pix of them once we're back in NYC, in NJ now). Guess I'll start attempting calligraphy next, since I've run out of home improvement projects! Alex also got me a couple of Cesar Milan dog books and an elephant book; Greg got me and elephant ring holder and in-laws got me 2 pairs of boots, coat, wallet, and a 3-tier serving platter (for my future parties).

Then went to visit my college roommate, Chris Schwarz Berman, in Elkridge, MD (bout 10 miles south of Baltimore). She's one of those really low-maintenance friends who I can not talk to for a year, then when we do, it was like we spoke yesterday. Tried to visit her last year on my big trek, but her mother was hospitalized in DC when I was going to see her. Have had a gift for her daughter from Tiffany's in the trunk for the last year and a half. Banged up the pretty bag and box, but the elephant bank survived.
Poor little Jules, diagnosed with Viral Encephalitis at 13 months old. Had 2 spinal taps and MRIs. Now at 18 months, she's doing well (although a little cranky in this photo).
